Why does my skin look so much worse in winter?

Unlucky us here in Canberra, winter seems to have hit early!

Have you noticed any changes to your skin lately? I sure have

Unfortunately, with the drop in temperature and humidity in the colder months means that there is also a drop in moisture within our skin as well. As a result, we are feeling dryer and flakier thank ever, like Canberra winters aren’t bad enough right?

There are a few changes that happen to our skin during this time that are contributing to what we are seeing on our skin. With a dramatic shift in temperature like we have just seen where it went from beautiful warm days to almost snowing overnight, this has caused our skin to essentially go into a little bit of shock until it finds a way to regulate itself. Internally, this means a little more inflammation, more water loss and a decrease in your cell turnover. Externally, this means we are dry, flaky and more sensitive, with those pesky reactive skin concerns like rosacea, acne and dermatitis rearing their heads again more than in the warmer months. The drop in temperatures often mean warmer showers, turning our heating on and consuming less water and opting for those warmer (but dehydrating) drinks.

DON’T PANIC!

There are plenty of ways we can support our skin during this time. If you aren’t sure what to do, my best advice is to speak to your trusted skin revision therapist about how to support your skin during the colder months.

IN CLINIC

Barrier repair, barrier repair, barrier repair. If you have had a consult with us you may have heard us harp on about how important that is for managing all skin concerns but now is more important than ever, so if you turned out before, tune in now!

Even though your cell turnover has slowed and are hanging on for dear life at the moment, we can help speed this process up again and get you feeling your normal glowing self in no time! Booking in for an enzyme is the perfect way to stimulate your cell renewal again but also put back all that moisture that our skin desperately needs. Don’t have that much time? That’s okay! One of our lunchtime peels will be perfect to give your skin that kickstart it needs.

AT HOME

Revisiting your at home skin care routine should be like rotating your wardrobe at the start of a new season. We know in summer we opt for lighter, less oily products because our skin is doing most of the heavy lifting in that department. In winter we need to change it up and provide more nourishment and care to our skin (and ourselves!). You may need to reach for your oils again and that more nourishing, rich crème to support and strengthen that barrier.

I know you are feeling dry and sensitive by adding in some more regular exfoliation can help relieve that tight, dry feeling. At Skin Solutions Canberra we have the perfect solution for that, whether you are time poor and want it over and done with within 10 minutes with our micropeel exfoliant or if you are feeling a bit boujee and want the added benefit of lymphatic drainage our At-Home Enzyme Mask has got you covered.

ITS NOT ALL THAT BAD

The best thing about the colder months is when we get to reintroduce some of our amazing skin revision protocols that we don’t do in the warmer months! If you are wanting to get some serious skin changes happening with pigmentation and aging, NOW IS YOUR TIME!!

With the cooler temperatures and the shorter days some of our treatment are more safe and effective during this time.

At Skin Solutions Canberra we love this time of year because we get to pull out the big guns to get you ready for all the big events and celebrations that all get booked at the beginning of summer.
